IDS to the Rescue in Holland

Integrated Document Solutions (IDS) has helped the University Hospital in Maarstricht Holland, conquer its printing problems by replacing its existing output management and distribution software with SpoolQ

The hospital had encountered problems with its new Xerox printers, which were using XPM NT spooling software from CP Bourg.

Xerox, which was liable to suffer penalty payments if its products failed to perform properly, called in IDS to help. IDS sent in a team to tackle the project and within a week was able to install SpoolQ and eliminate the glitches that had bedeviled the system.

Mark Dowson, a senior consultant with IDS, takes up the story: "The challenge was that the customer was working with lots of small print files, some of them one- or two-page documents. This put the spooling software under pressure, since it had to work extremely quickly. There were also high volumes – around 1,000 print files a night."

With some minor tuning, SpoolQ was up to the task and the site is now running the system live on a daily basis.

"The first priority in the design of SpoolQ is that it should never lose data," said Mark Dowson. "XPM NT could not guarantee that. We had a week to get our software configured and working reliably in the live system. Xerox Netherlands is very pleased with it – we have saved them a lot of money."

Xerox Netherlands is so impressed by the operation of SpoolQ in Maarstricht, and the support provided by IDS, that it has now adopted the product in preference to XPM NT.

According to Mark Dowson, SpoolQ is now running at two Xerox sites in Holland and three more orders are expected to follow soon.
